Half-term movies

Nicola from mumonabudget.co.uk highlights that “most cinemas extend their cheap kid’s movie screenings to cover every day of the school holidays. This means you can catch a relatively recent movie on the big screen for typically around £3 a ticket, so a big saving on what you’d normally pay.”

Free things to visit during half-term

Zoe Morrison from www.ecothriftyliving.com says there are many free things to do during half term, “you can go to the library and get books out, take the kids to the park, visit free local museums and points of interest and look at what’s on in your local area for free half-term activities”. She also points out the kids can also do some physical exercises in the form of chores like room tidying and de-cluttering. “Take them swimming (kids swim free in her town). Where possible walk, scoot or cycle to places and take a packed lunch”. Tire the little ones out during half-term with exercise and reading, ingenious.

Hollie Ann from thriftymum.com says there are “free craft sessions hosted by HobbyCraft. These are held nationally. They provide all the equipment you need and the creative mess the kids make stays in the store, so you don’t have to clean up afterwards”. Outsource the mess during half-term, top idea.

Catherine Morgan from themoneypanel.co.uk recommends that “Waterstones do some great free events across the country. Also if you have children age 11 and under, make use of your tax-free childcare allowance or childcare vouchers to pay for any Ofsted registered playgroup, childminder or holiday club. For every £8 paid in, the government will top it up with an additional £2”. Definitely something to consider.

Emma Maslin from themoneywhisperer.co.uk highlights there are so many free museums to visit “ Everyone loves The Natural History Museum in London, but it can get super busy in the holidays. Did you know that there are other, smaller options? Including the Natural History Museum of Tring, Oxford and Brighton”. Definitely a good free option.

Staying in during half-term

Claire Roach from dailydealsblog.co.uk explains that during half term period it can be really expensive when you are trying to keep the kids entertained every day, but there are loads of things you can do without spending a lot of money. She recommends “a home cinema day, where the family can keep their PJs on, grab a bowl of popcorn and quilts and spend an entire day on the sofa watching movies”. That’s a perfect antidote to a wet weather week.

Michelle Bailey from www.timeandpence.com has a top frugal tip. “To save money during half term get some old board games out and enjoy some quality family time. Sit around the table with some snacks and put your phones away. We recently taught my son Monopoly and he loved it. Most kids want your time and attention, not your money”. Sometimes the best things in life are free.

Pete Chatfield from www.householdmoneysaving.com is a Blue Peter fan. His tip is “If you haven’t done so already, get your kids to write a poem or make a picture and send it to the BBC for a Blue Peter Badge. The badge also gives kids free entry to lots of attractions across the U.K”. The badge sounds almost like a Willy Wonka golden pass, doesn’t it?

Cooking with the kids during the half-term

Turn the kids into mini-chefs

Naomi Will from www.skintchef.co.uk is a keen chef. Her tip is around baking, “my kids love baking and there are loads of easy recipes for kids like shortbread, banana bread, cheese sticks, or homemade pizza, which keeps them busy for ages”. That’s definitely food for thought.

Emma Jackson from beemoneysavvy.com also a keen cook mentions that “when kids are off school, it can be tempting to keep them occupied with snacks and unhealthy food. To save money and stay away from unhealthy habits, get the kids involved in cooking up some healthy meals. You could let them pick out a new recipe, help you buy the ingredients and delegate small cooking jobs to them”. Turning the kids into mini chefs, clever!
