What is Bolt?

Bolt formerly known as Taxify, is an Estonian transportation network company founded and headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia. The company develops and operates the Bolt mobile application, which allows people to request a taxi or private driver from their smartphone, as well as electric scooters. In fact Bolt is very popular outside of the UK, with more than 25 million users in over 30 countries globally.

Bolt arrived in London in 2017 before being dropped a few days later by TFL for failing to acquire the right licensing. It relaunched as Bolt earlier this year and is already starting to increase in popularity. Rides start with a £2.50 base fee, plus £1.25 per mile and £0.15 per minute.

How does Bolt work for drivers?

Bolt will take a 15 per cent commission from its drivers – almost half of what Uber takes, which means it can charge its riders less. Its key differentiator against Uber is its lower fees for customers and lower commission for drivers.

How does Bolt work for customers? (After you have downloaded the App.)

Request – Choose a car that fits your style and budget, then set your location

Ride – Watch your driver arrive on the map Pay and Rate – You can rate your driver and pay for the trip automatically through the app

Bolt App Negatives

Due to there being less Bolt drivers than the popular Uber, expect to wait a few minutes extra for your pick up. As less of your friends are on it, things like splitting the fare maybe easier to do on the Uber (until your friends join this App that is). Their App is not as seamless as Uber, drivers can accept jobs before they finish an existing job, so the waiting time element is not correct.

Bolt App Positives

It is cheaper than Uber and the drivers are getting paid more, so you as a customer get these saving and pay less. Also, there is a great promotion where when you join you get a free Bolt promo code for a 50% off your next taxi ride in the UK (max £6 per trip).

Refer someone else and you get another £6 off your next few trips for you and them (use the Bolt promo code). After that, you get 15% off you next 5 trips. Fancy a drive in a Tesla? Now you can select a Tesla taxi for an approx 10% increase in the total fare.

How is Bolt performing?

City AM has reported that 300,000 Londoners have signed up in just 3 months, which shows it is threatening the dominance of Uber’s taxi app, so watch this space.
