Car rental abroad saving tips

1024 684 Great Deals Made Easy

Going away for more than a few days? It can make sense to hire a car, instead of relying on expensive taxis and airport transfers whilst you are away. Car hire can give you the freedom to explore a place at your own pace and not be as expensive as you think.

From personal experience and research online, here are the top 4 ways to save money online when  hiring a care abroad:

Always book your car hire early online

It may seem obvious, but the further you book up front, the cheaper the rental cost. Aim for at least a week in advance.

Use car providers comparison sites

Don’t pay for car hire at the airport car hire desks, it will cost a lot more. Visit sites like Sky scanner and carrentals.com to compare deals.

Watch out for high fuel charges

Car hire companies can charge you a pre-paid full tank at a premium rate and if you don’t use it all, you lose the money. The better firms can offer you “pay what you use” policy or just bring back the petrol as a full tank, which can work out cheaper.

Think carefully about car hire insurance

Booking car rental insurance separately from a standalone provider can be the way to go, often finding insurance from £3/day. Sometimes, your current car insurance package or your credit card can cover car rentals. These policies work out by you paying any damages and then reclaiming the money back from the excess insurer.
